Description: The Portuguese Fisherwoman’s Shawl was designed by Shelagh Smith of Vermont Designs by Shelagh. The inspiration for the pattern came from a garment purchased by a friend of Shelagh’s while on a vacation trip to Nazaré, Portugual. Nazaré is a picturesque seaside fishing village in Central Portugal where local fishermen continue to use colorfully painted, wooden fishing boats with curved prows. Oxen pull the boats onto the beach where the fish are sorted by fisherwomen wearing a similar wrap-around shawl as part of their traditional costume.
The Portuguese Fisherwoman’s Shawl incorporates short row bands of stockinette & reverse stockinette to create beautiful drape over the shoulders. Ties cross in front and knot behind the back to keep the arms free. Note: this item includes the pattern only. The pattern is also available as a kit to knit
